Bioenergy: Refueling the Future

Solar Energy

[9.1]

Solar energy is an endless, renewable source.  Solar energy is created by harnessing the sun's light and heat by capturing them through solar panels.  Solar energy accounts for the majority of renewable energy, however only a fraction of the available energy is being used.  Solar energy can be adapted to fuel houses, offices, schools, cars, and many more.  [9.2]

How does it work?
There are two methods of harnessing solar energy.  One focuses on gathering thermal energy and the other focuses on light energy.

 Thermal Solar:

[9.3]

  1. Solar panels collect solar heat.
  2. Heat is transferred to water which flow through tubes in the panels.
  3. The tubes circulate through out a given space, exerting heat to the surrounding air .
[9.3]

Photovoltaic Solar:

[9.4]

  1. Photovoltaic panels collect solar light.
  2. The light is converted into direct current energy.
