First generation biofuels refer to fuel derived from crops like starch, corn, animal fats and vegetable oil.

The Process 

• The biomass (the crop) is broken down into primary sugars
• These sugars are then fermented into ethanol or biodiesel.
• Then the ethanol or biodiesel is mixed into gasoline to be used as fuel.
